The opposition AIADMK has demanded that the Government convene a special session of the Legislative Assembly to bring in a legislation for 50% quota of seats in private medical colleges in the Union Territory. This year the government failed to get even one seat for students from Puducherry from any of the four deemed universities. He sought to know if the government could deprive nominated MLAs their voting rights just by passing a resolution, why the medical college issue could not be handled through a resolution. All along students from Puducherry had been suffering for want of this quota although the neighbouring Tamil Nadu had earmarked 65% of the seats under the government quota. While the deemed universities throughout the country did not surrender any seats under the government quota, the Puducherry government had managed in getting seats from deemed universities in undergraduate and postgraduate courses under the government quota last year.
