AIADMK seeks special session on medical admission

The opposition AIADMK has demanded that the Government convene a special session of the Legislative Assembly to bring in a legislation for 50% quota of seats in private medical colleges in the Union Territory. This year the government failed to get even one seat for students from Puducherry from any of the four deemed universities. He sought to know if the government could deprive nominated MLAs their voting rights just by passing a resolution, why the medical college issue could not be handled through a resolution. All along students from Puducherry had been suffering for want of this quota although the neighbouring Tamil Nadu had earmarked 65% of the seats under the government quota. While the deemed universities throughout the country did not surrender any seats under the government quota, the Puducherry government had managed in getting seats from deemed universities in undergraduate and postgraduate courses under the government quota last year.

AIADMK Legislature party leader A. Anbalagan told presspersons here on Monday that it had become a norm in Puducherry for the government to enter into talks with private managements every year, whereas in other States there was a law in place mandating the managements to provide 50% seats as government quota. All along students from Puducherry had been suffering for want of this quota although the neighbouring Tamil Nadu had earmarked 65% of the seats under the government quota. Mr. Anbalagan said the government had been doing injustice to students. Both the Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and the Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi were not showing any interest in meeting their requirements every year. While the deemed universities throughout the country did not surrender any seats under the government quota, the Puducherry government had managed in getting seats from deemed universities in undergraduate and postgraduate courses under the government quota last year. This year the government failed to get even one seat for students from Puducherry from any of the four deemed universities. Fee committee The Fee Committee is not functioning properly. The committee had prescribed ?21 lakh as fees for MBBS students who had cleared the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) while the fees in deemed universities was in the range of ?13 lakh to ?14 lakh. Mr. Anbalagan said it was not correct on the part of the government to say that it had no power to enact a law. He sought to know if the government could deprive nominated MLAs their voting rights just by passing a resolution, why the medical college issue could not be handled through a resolution.
