The ‘Bonding Angel’ programme, which is a combined initiative of the Departments of Neonatology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Nursing College, Jipmer, will have a dedicated female nursing student (Bonding Angel) bringing the mother and baby together soon after delivery and initiating breastfeeding at the earliest. The nurse will also ensure correct position and attachment during breastfeeding to offset risks of hypoglycemia in the newborn, facilitate good uterine contraction in the mother and help bonding between mother and baby. Dr. B. Adhisivam, Additional Professor of Neonatology, said breastfeeding within one hour of delivery is an evidence-based high-impact intervention for improving neonatal survival. According to the National Family Health Survery-4, only 41.6% of neonates are breastfed within one hour of birth. Despite 80% of the deliveries being institutional, early initiation of breastfeeding is suboptimal in the country. Through the programme, postnatal mothers and nursing students will be sensitised for early initiation of breastfeeding and this will have a positive impact on the hospital personnel and the community. Dr. Ashok Shankar Badhe, Medical Superintendent, who formally launched the programme, distributed the Bonding Angel badges to the nursing students. Dr. Kumari M.J., Principal, Nursing College, Dr. Dilipkumar Maurya, Additional Professor of Obstetrics and Dr. Sindhu S, Assistant Professor, Neonatology, stressed on the importance of the initiative.
