The Puducherry administration in April this year revoked the 7.5 per cent special Covid duty levied on liquor, which had brought down the prices of liquor in the union territory.
The Puducherry government has increased the prices of all types of liquor by 20 percent. Announcing this on Wednesday, the Excise Department said that the new prices will be effective from July 15. However, liquor prices in Puducherry will still remain low as compared to the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and other states.
The Puducherry administration in April this year revoked the 7.5 per cent special Covid duty levied on liquor, which had brought down the prices of liquor in the union territory. Liquor became cheaper in the Union Territory after the Excise Department`s proposal to end the validity of special excise duty from April 7 was approved by Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Sundararajan.
The Special Excise Duty(SED) was levied in May last year to bring down the price at par with neighbouring states to prevent the movement of people from Tamil Nadu to Puducherry during the Covid-19 pandemic. But the duty was withdrawn to make liquor cheaper to net revenue to the fund-starved exchequer. While cancelling the special duty, the Lieutenant Governor had ordered all pubs, retail liquor vendors and restaurants to follow the safety rules. According to a press release from the Lieutenant Governor`s office, it was removed after getting approval from the Election Commission.
