The names of the victims were given as Selvaraj, a retired staff of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) and his grandson Bharath. On Thursday, residents of Kamaraj Nagar extension in Gorimedu complained of foul smell emanating from a locked house in the area. Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the house belonged to Selvaraj. The victim’s wife Vasantha (65), their son Siva alias Sivakumar (42) and daughter Shakila’s son Bharath were staying in the house. The police broke open the main door and found that the floor was washed with phenyl. A few blood stains were found. Following instructions from Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Rajiv Ranjan, a team conducted enquiries with the local people. Investigations by the police team led by Rachna Singh, SP (North), revealed that a person known to the family could have committed the crime. The needle of suspicion pointed to Selvaraj’s son Sivakumar after he was reported to be absconding. The police nabbed Sivakumar. Sustained interrogation revealed that Sivakumar along with his mother Vasantha had murdered his father Selvaraj and nephew Bharath on April 15 using kitchen knives and scissors. After committing the murder, the duo cut the bodies into pieces and packed it in seven polythene bags. The accused carried the bags in his two-wheeler and dumped them in a water body at Poothurai in Villupuram district. Sivakumar confessed to his involvement in the crime. The police team arrested his mother Vasantha and recovered the weapons used in the crime. Fight over property Police said that Selvaraj had a dispute with his wife Vasantha and son Sivakumar in sharing the house. The accused had pressured his father to conduct his marriage and to register the house in his name. But Selvaraj refused and said that he would register the house in the name of his grandson. The two hatched a plot to eliminate Selvaraj and Bharath. They were produced before a local court and remanded in custody.
