PG medical admission: Special Bench to hear appeals

The Chief Justice of Madras High Court has agreed to constitute a Special Bench to hear the appeals moved by in-service candidates in connection with the Post Graduate medical admission 2017-18 for the seats under 50% seats under State quota. The order mandated the State government to follow Medical Council of India’s (MCI) PG Medical Education Regulations, 2000, while making admissions to PG courses in the 50% quota available for the State. Vijayan citing the urgency in the matter as the medical seats have to be filled before May 7. The issue was brought to the knowledge of the Chief Justice in view of the directions passed by a Division Bench which was handling the pleas to approach the Chief. Batch of appeals The issue pertains to a batch of appeals moved by in-service candidates of post-graduate medical courses assailing the order of a single judge dated April 17. The order mandated the State government to follow Medical Council of India’s (MCI) PG Medical Education Regulations, 2000, while making admissions to PG courses in the 50% quota available for the State. Rural service Claiming that the order, if implemented, would affect the rights of the in-service candidates in availing additional incentive marks provided by the State government for serving in rural/hilly/remote areas, the candidates have approached the Madras High Court seeking to stay the single judge order.
