The Reddiyarpalayam police have registered a case under Section 174 (died under suspicious circumstances or unnatural death) of Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.PC). According to police, Krishnaveni was living alone in the house. Her eldest son Sankaralingam was staying in France while another son Velayudam and daughter Leelavathi were staying in Arumarthapuram. Ellammal, a servant employed at the victim’s household knocked the door of her house in the morning. When there was no response, she informed her son Velayudam and other members. They broke open the door and found Krishnaveni hanging and alerted the police. Police said the jewellery worn by the victim was also found missing. On information, Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Rajeev Ranjan visited the spot and conducted enquiries with family members. The body was sent to the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital at Kathirgamam for post-mortem. Mr. Ranjan said that the cause of death would be known only after the post-mortem report. “We are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain whether it was a case of suicide or any foul play.” The police are probing into various angles, including whether the incident has any connection with the murder of her daughter Kalaivani in 2015. Special teams were formed to probe the murder of Kalaivani. The police also examined CCTV footage in the residential locality and questioned several people. However, a breakthrough is yet to be made in the case, following which the police faced flak from various political parties and civil society organisations. The incident could further arm the Opposition in mounting an offensive against the Government on the law and order front when the Assembly reconvenes on Wednesday.
