Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has exhorted French nationals and those residing either in Puducherry or abroad to come forward and create a trust to preserve heritage buildings in Puducherry.

Speaking at the French National Day celebrations here on Friday, she said that Puducherry had a vibrant connection with that country. French nationals could make contributions to the trust which would be a people dominated organisation . They could have the government as a facilitator.

A website would draw people from different parts of the world, she said.

The objective was to mobilise funds voluntarily and to help individuals to stand on their own legs without expecting any funding by the State or Central governments.

Ms. Bedi also appealed to the French nationals to participate in the weekend cycle rallies to ensure a clean Puducherry. A walkathon and marathon could also be organised by joint initiatives in implementing the programmes.

Smart City accord

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy said that Puducherry and France had vibrant relations and Puducherry still retained the French culture. Technical experts from France would ink an agreement with the Puducherry government in September to launch the Smart City project.

The government had been sanctioned funds by the French development agency Agence Française de Développement (AFD) for assured water supply and uninterrupted power supply, he said.

French Consul General Phillipe Janvier-Kamiyama said the main objective of the third edition of Bonjour India was to strengthen France-India collaborations. Far away from stereotypes, the projects were aimed at giving opportunity to Indian and French artists, students, researchers and professionals to work together and deepen their mutual understanding.
