Weekend visit: Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi has asked the officials to clear the mess at the TB Quarters. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement more-in The dilapidated TB Quarters in Gorimedu could give way to a centre for mental health and communicable diseases, Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi suggested on Sunday. During a weekend inspection of the quarters following a complaint about its shabby state by a resident of Indira Nagar constituency, Ms. Bedi said demolition of the quarters and establishing the proposed centre was a long-term project and in the meantime, the place had to be cleaned. Unoccupied units At present, of the 42 dwelling units in the quarters, only 10 were occupied. She said that it had been proposed to demolish the unoccupied portion of the quarters and build a communicable diseases hospital on the site. It had been reported that Puducherry lacked a distinct mental hospital and the patients were required to be referred to Chennai or Bengaluru for certification under Mental III Health Act. The Lt. Governor said that every part of the city had to be provided with minimum basic amenities. Puducherry would be a smart city only if the development was holistic, touching every part of the Union Territory. The Lt. Governor asked the Public Works Department to hold co-ordination meeting with Commissioners of Oulgaret Municipality and Puducherry Municipality to identify the problem areas and work out solutions. The Assistant Engineers and Junior Engineers of the Public Works Department and the municipality had to take responsibility of assigned areas and identify, on their own, areas that require immediate attention.
