After nearly 6 years, govt. hikes bus fares

The Puducherry government has revised the bus fares of town service buses, stage carriages, express stage carriages and night service buses with immediate effect. In an effort aimed at promoting public transport, the department has introduced air-conditioned and night service buses in urban areas. For buses plying in neighbouring states, the fare fixed in the respective States alone will apply. For night buses plying between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., the fare will be twice the day rate. The hike will be around 75 to 90 paise per km for all stage carriers. The fares have been revised after five-and-a-half years, according to a senior Transport Department official. The Pondicherry Bus (Stage Carriage) Owners had been urging the government to increase the bus fare fixed in 2012 considering the increase in the cost of fuel, lubricants, tyres and other market related costs and operational costs etc., According to Transport Commissioner S.D. Sundaresan, the Government had adopted the fare revision mechanism suggested by MS DIMTS who had prepared the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Puducherry. For town buses plying within the limits of the Union Territory, the minimum rates fixed for the First stage (3 km) is not exceeding ?.5 and for subsequent stages, ?.2 will be charged additionally. For State carriages plying within the UT, a fare not exceeding ?.8 will be charged for a distance up to six km. For every additional km, 75 paise will be charged. AC, night service buses The fare for Express stage carriages plying within the UT has been fixed not exceeding ?.25 for a distance up to 25 km. For every additional km, 90 paise will be charged. In an effort aimed at promoting public transport, the department has introduced air-conditioned and night service buses in urban areas. The fare for air-conditioned buses will be twice that of non-AC buses. For night buses plying between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., the fare will be twice the day rate. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) as fixed by the government will be collected in addition to the fare, wherever applicable and modified from time to time. For buses plying in neighbouring states, the fare fixed in the respective States alone will apply.
