Pune: 'Husband gave our 4-yr-old liquor

A32-year-old woman has filed a complaint against her husband and father-in-law, claiming that she suffered constant harassment at their hands simple because she hails from Assam. Speaking to Mirror, the complainant said, “My husband and in-laws have not only harassed me, but have threatened the health of my child. Six days after my son was born, my father-in-law gave him a him a few drops of alcohol, claiming it was a family ritual. I eventually left and went to my parents.”She added, “My son was two years old at the time and my husband would take him out every weekend. The complainant claimed that her husband and father-in-law would start consuming liquor every day at 7.30 pm and she was told to make all manner of arrangements and also sit with them till her father-in-law finished his drinks.

The woman also complained that they were administering alcohol to her three-anda- half-year old child.The Wanowrie police have booked Vishal Tandon and his father Vedprakash Tandon for under relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.The complainant works as a sale manager in a private company in Mundhwa, while Vishal is a marketing manager at Phoenix City mall in Viman Nagar. The complainant and her family are from Assam, but settled in Pune after her father, an army officer, retired.The complainant and Vishal befriended each other in Pune and got married in June 2011. According to the complainant, her family spent Rs 15 lakh on the wedding, but the Tondons continued to ask for gold coins and jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh, which the woman’s mother eventually handed over. She also stated that since she is from Assam and the Tandon from Punjab, Vishal’s father and sister were not happy with the marriage.Things went well for two months, but then the harassment started. The complainant claimed that her husband and father-in-law would start consuming liquor every day at 7.30 pm and she was told to make all manner of arrangements and also sit with them till her father-in-law finished his drinks. If she refused, the husband would beat and abuse her. They also kept demanding various items from the complainant’s family as dowry, especially during festivals.In August 2014, the couple had a son. Speaking to Mirror, the complainant said, “My husband and in-laws have not only harassed me, but have threatened the health of my child. Six days after my son was born, my father-in-law gave him a him a few drops of alcohol, claiming it was a family ritual. My husband was beating me constantly. Once it got so bad that I called the police, but nothing came of it. I eventually left and went to my parents.”She added, “My son was two years old at the time and my husband would take him out every weekend. He would mix whisky with cold drinks and give them to my son, which caused health problems. Another Tandon family ritual is that when a child is 11 months old, they remove shave his head and dip him in a holy pond at Haridwar three times. My son was only six months old and they took him to Haridwar in February 2015, when the water was too cold. I was opposing them, but they went ahead. Again, the child suffered major health issues.”Wanowrie police have booked Vishal and Vedprakash under sections 498A and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Advocate Debajyoti Talukdar, who is representing the complainant, told Mirror, “We demanded an investigation and will be filing a separate complaint in court.”Senior PI Sayaji Gaware of Wanowrie PS, said, “We need to investigate the case properly. We have sent them notices and will be taking action.”Mirror reached out to Vishal for a comment, but he did not respond.
