PUNE: A city-based researcher from Deccan College and trekkers recently discovered a new fort, christened Davalgad, on Bhuleshwar Hill near Purandar. In the book Killa Purandar, history scholar Krishnaji Vaman Purandare had mentioned a fort called Davalgad but the structure had hitherto been unseen, the researcher claimed.Researcher Sachin Joshi from Deccan College told TOI that Davalgad has as yet remained undiscovered, although it was earlier mentioned in some texts. “City-based trekker Omkar Oke, however, recently set out to look for this fort and finally found it on Bhuleshwar Hill in Purandar region. The fort will now become the latest addition to the list of forts that Maharashtra has to its credit,” said Joshi.Local villagers knew of the temple called Davleshwar on the hill in their village Amble but they were clueless about the existence of the fort. “There are two ways leading to the fort — the first being Vanpuri-Singapur-Pargao Chafula-Vaghapur-Amble, from where there is a ‘kachcha’ road that leads to the fort. Another path is from the Pune-Solapur road to Urulikanchan and Dalimb village. Purandare’s book did mention that the fort is situated on Bhuleshwar Hill. However, because the villagers did not know about the fort, no historical research was undertaken in the area and it had merely become a forgotten monument in the annals of time,” said Joshi.Joshi said that the trekkers weren’t aware of the fort. Oke and other bird watchers had recently gone to Amble village when they saw a projection atop the hill with a fortification wall. “Since even the gazetteer did not mention the fort, Oke approached me and we revisited the site to establish that it was indeed the fabled Davalgad Fort . We checked for all the aspects that a fort should ideally have — a fortification wall, bastion, temple, water tanks, among other such regalia. This fort had all of that,” said Joshi.
