Autorickshaw driver and aide kill passenger over Rs 20 row

PUNE: An autorickshaw passenger was beaten to death by the vehicle’s driver and his accomplice following a dispute over Rs20 late on Sunday afternoon at Raviwar Peth.The Faraskhana police identified the deceased as Tanaji Dhondiram Korke (31) of Nilanga in Latur . He was currently staying at Raviwar Peth. The autorickshaw driver, Atul alias Ishwar Dashrath Harade (54), and his accomplice, Rohan Dnyaneshwar Godse (40), both of Raviwar Peth, have been arrested.Senior inspector Balkrishna Ambure said Korke was employed with a caterer. The driver, Harade, demanded Rs40 for the trip. After reaching Raviwar Peth around 2.45pm, Korke handed him Rs20. Harade took Rs20 after an argument and left the spot,” Ambure said.For some reasons, Korke then decided to visit the Pune railway station area. “He walked about 200m and spotted an autorickshaw. It turned out to be the same autorickshaw driven by Harade. When Korke asked him to drop him at Pune railway station, Harade demanded the remaining Rs20 and an argument ensued,” he said.Harade and Godse are neighbours. Hearing the arguments, Godse came out of his house and started arguing with Korke, Ambure said.“The two kicked and punched Korke. He fell on the road and his head banged against the cement block on the road. He could not get up. A resident of the area alerted the police, saying an unconscious man was lying on the road,” he said.Ambure said, “On reaching the spot, policemen met Harade and Godse. Both said that the man was lying there for long. The policemen took Korke to Sassoon General Hospital in Harade’s autorickshaw, where he was pronounced dead.”The hospital authorities told the police that Korke died because of injuries. “We scanned the area where Korke was lying for CCTV cameras and found one. Its footage revealed that Harade and Godse had beaten him up and we arrested them,” he said.
