Pune: No more water release for crops

The dams are waiting for the monsoon to begin in earnest, as that would push the water stock up.Last month, the department had started releasing water into the canal for summer crops. PUNE: The irrigation department on Monday stopped the release of water into the Mutha canal to ensure uninterrupted supply to Pune over the next few days.The decision was taken as water stock in the four dams, which cater to Pune’s needs, dipped to 3.07 TMC. The city requires 1.5 TMC of water per month.The irrigation department has also asked PMC to avoid wastage and use water judiciously. Over the last two days, the release was restricted before completely stopping on Monday.The 3-odd TMC will be reserved to meet the drinking water needs of the city and a few rural parts till July 31.

The PMC is laying a pipeline from Parvati water works to Pune Cantonment water works to avoid losses. “The situation is not alarming as of now, as the catchments often receive good rainfall in July,” a senior irrigation official said.Two months ago, guardian minister Girish Bapat had instructed the PMC to stop lifting additional water, and limit it to 1,350 MLD, to which the PMC agreed.
