Ina shocking incident, an elderly couple consumed poison after being continually harassed in a dowry case filed by their daughter-in-law soon after she married their son. The suicide attempt led to the death of the man while his wife continues to battle for her life in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a local hospital.The couple has been identified as Anil Dhotre (48) and his wife Shantabai Dhotre (45), both residents of Chakan. What is ironic is the fact that the police have not yet registered an FIR in the case and are still probing it as an accidental death.In a suicide note allegedly written by the couple, it has been mentioned that they consumed poison as they were fed up with their daughter-in-law who has filed a case of dowry harassment with the court, for which they frequently had to appear for hearings. This impacted their professional and personal lives badly, the note alleged.The couple works with the Chakan Nagar Parishad sanitation department. Their son, Avinash, married one Komal Dhotre a few years ago and as per the family’s claims, there was no dowry taken during the wedding. But, the girl would often go off to her parents and quarrel frequently with her inlaws.As per the suicide note left by the couple, it has come to the fore that due to all the leave they had to take for court procedures, their contractor had not paid their salaries for the last six months.Their relatives claimed that the couple had been to the police station to file a complaint against the contractor for not disbursing their salaries, but the police took no cognisance of their demand and the couple’s financial state continued to deteriorate, to the point where they were often forced to ask people around them for money.The suicide note also claims that the couple would be mocked and made fun of often during meetings of the sanitation department and also among the staff members leaving them humiliated. “Fed up with all this, we are committing suicide,” the note further read.The couple had written the note on June 12 and had been admitted in hospital since then, as soon after writing, they consumed apoisonous substance.“We have not yet registered the FIR in the case as our investigation is still on. We have taken a complaint for accidental death so far and the FIR will be taken once our investigation is complete. We have found the note and we are verifying its authenticity,” said Manoj Kumar Yadav, police inspector at Chakan police station, while speaking to Mirror.Meanwhile, the relatives of the couple refused to accept the body of the deceased, demanding that a proper investigation be conducted in the case.
