Girl’s scooter skids in pothole, truck crushes her

She fell off her vehicle and a speeding truck ran over her.The Kondhwa police said Zainab fell after her scooter entered the pothole on the edge of the road. Before she could be back on her feet, the speeding truck ran over her. The truck driver sped away from the spot. Passers-by shifted her to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead.Police claimed that the poor road condition in the Khadi Machine Chowk led to 22 fatal accidents in the past two years. The TOI had highlighted the mess in its June 23, 2018 edition.According to the Kondhwa police, Zainab came under the truck around 1.15pm. A case has been registered against the unidentified truck driver for rash and negligent driving.Senior inspector Milind Gaikwad said, “The pothole is in front of Ashirwad furniture showroom on the edge of the road.”Gaikwad said Zainab had secured admission in a college at Undri to pursue her postgraduate diploma in business administration. As she got admission in another institution, she was going to cancel her seat in the Undri college when the accident occurred.“Zainab recently passed BCS with good marks and was looking forward to a career in business administration,” he said. Zainab is survived by her younger brother and her father, working in Dubai. Her mother is a homemaker.Gaikwad said he visited the accident spot on Friday and Saturday for a spot analysis. “I realized that Zainab went to the edge of the road while driving. A big pothole has made the stretch treacherous. The road is so bad that she could not maintain her balance after hitting the pothole. To make matters worse, rain had made the road slippery. She fell on her right side. The truck came from the rear and crushed her under its rear wheel,” he said.An official of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)’s road department said he would ask a team to visit the spot and take measures to avoid any further accident on the stretch. He said the PMC had initiated steps to widen and resurface the road.
