PUNE: In less than 20 days, the booth level officers (BLOs) involved in door-to-door voters’ registration drive in Pune district will need to cover roughly 8.16 lakh households. If they fail, the BLOs will face action, said Pune district collector Naval Kishore Ram after a meeting with election officials in Mumbai on Thursday. The Election Commission of India has instructed the state to wrap up the door-to-door registration and voters’ name-checking campaign by July 31. The district collector said it is a humungous task, but the officials will ensure that all 17 lakh households — or 71 lakh voters, as per the electoral rolls — are covered by month-end. At present, just 52% of the voters have been covered by the BLOs.“We know the practical difficulties and will work out a way. We are going to try and attain maximum coverage by the month-end,” Kishore Ram said. The Pune district election office has also announced special voters’ camps on July 14 and July 28. Citizens have been asked to visit their polling booths to ensure that their names are on the voters’ list. Even new voters can be registered during the camps. With many societies claiming that the BLOs are yet to visit their area, the collector has promised to look into the matter. “I have asked the BLOs to make the drive a priority. They must furnish the details of their visits and the electoral registration officer (ERO) will be made accountable for ensuring that the households are covered. A certificate will be taken from the ERO and the BLOs after the completion of the survey,” the collector said. “We are having issues in Hadapsar, Wadgaonsheri, Pune Cantonment, PCMC and Kothrud Assembly constituencies. We are trying to sort things out there,” he added. FIRs have already been registered by the EROs on various BLOs.The drive has been on since May and one special camp conducted on June 23. However, many members of housing societies are not satisfied with the publicity for the drive.Suhas Patwardhan, the chairman of Pune District Cooperative Housing Federation, said, “We are planning to reach out to all our cooperative societies. We will tie up with the election department and have camps and awareness programmes in all these societies by involving the chairman and other members.” The federation’s PCMC counterpart too will take similar measures. This was revealed by KC Garg, who represents the Lokpriya Chinchwad Federation. Ravindra Sinha, a core member of Hinjewadi IT Park Residents’ Welfare Association (HIRWA), said, “The BLOs should form WhatsApp groups of societies, mohalla committees and area sabhas. This will make their job of announcing camps and ensuring the success of the registration drive easier.”
