PUNE: The incessant rains have made the walks to and from the aircraft extremely uncomfortable for the passengers at the Pune airport The airport officials’ solution to this very valid passenger concern has been merely to ask the airlines to provide their patrons with umbrellas. Though there was also some talk about the airport getting buses/coaches, that idea did not pan out. Now the officials want the airlines to arrange for their own coaches. Understandably, passengers are annoyed.Sandeep Borse, an angry Jet Airways passenger, took to Twitter on Monday. His tweet read: “Please explain why the captain of 9W371 (flight number) denied entry to passengers in aircraft (as per ground staff) and made passengers wait outside aircraft for 30 minutes in rain after crossing boarding gate at Pune airport and why don’t you care for passengers (sic).”When contacted, a Jet spokesperson said: “Guests waiting to board Jet Airways flight 371 were provided with umbrellas. There are just two aerobridges, but six parking bays. Therefore, there is a constraint in providing protection from rain to all passengers. This issue has been taken up by the airline community with the airline operator. As a rule, the cabin services team prepares the cabins for the next departure after which, guests are boarded. In this case, because of the rains, the process was speeded up to allow guest boarding. Jet Airways sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused.”On Monday, the airport officials have put most of the responsibility of keeping passengers dry in the rain on airlines. Last week, the officials had said they would arrange for coaches for the airlines, and the latter could use them on a cost-basis. They had even talked of one party that had shown interest in providing these coaches. However, the meeting between the interested party and the airport officials did not take place. An official said the issue was recently discussed with AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra. “The AAI chairman has assured that the construction of aerobridges at the Pune airport will be taken up on a priority basis now,” he said.
