With towels vanishing railways to introduce disposable napkins

Pune: Tired of towels disappearing from train compartments, the Pune railway division has decided to provide passengers with disposable napkins along with on-board bedding.“Around 30,000 towels given to the passengers disappeared in the last 13 months. The number will be one per passenger on short-distance trains,” the official said.The new napkins are disposable and it won’t make much of a difference even if disappears. We can save the money once we start using the new napkins,” the official said. Since May last year, we have incurred a loss of around Rs10 lakh because of this,” a railway official said.“It’s certain the many passengers must have stolen such towels. The ministry has now decided to replace the towels with a cheaper alternative. The disappearance of the towels will now not hit us bad financially,” the official said.The ministry in the last week of June decided to give disposable napkins to passengers travelling in air-conditioned compartments instead of the existing towels made of thick water soaking cloth.“In May this year, 4,813 towels disappeared. The Pune rail division has got around 12 originating trains in all. Many people, for some unknown reason, think that they can carry the towels once the journey is over. The main reason is that the quality of these towels is superior,” another official said.“Though we are not categorizing, many women often use the towels to clean the infants and either throw them after use or take them away. The coach attendants often try to retrieve the towels, it becomes difficult many times because of passenger rush,” the official said.The Pune rail division will switch over to the new alternative very soon. “We are in the process of inviting quotations. Once the formalities are over, it shouldn’t take much time. On long distance trains, a set of two new towels will be provided for each passenger. The number will be one per passenger on short-distance trains,” the official said.The new napkins are disposable and it won’t make much of a difference even if disappears. The official said, “Washing the existing towels also costs much. We can save the money once we start using the new napkins,” the official said.
