Pune: Commerce has been an evergreen stream for students be it for the purpose of getting a job after graduation or pursuing higher studies. However, due to the increase in entrepreneurship, emphasis on start-ups and complicated tax structures in general, it has given rise to a number of courses for the uninitiated to understand the world of finance.“After working for almost 10 years, I quit my job and did some certificate courses in portfolio management and I have already got two job offers. I think online courses are the best way to go if you are opting for niche jobs in the financial sector,” Prerna Sikarwar who did her MBA and worked in an IT firm said, adding there is a huge vacancy for students who understand the goods and services tax (GST). “Almost all companies, big and small are grappling with uploading monthly data, etc and hence a good grasp of GST would be extremely beneficial for students.”Vidya Gargote, the SPPU’s management council member and audit officer, said, “Commerce is an evergreen branch. One can easily get a job in a private sector after getting a commerce degree because every industry, big or small, requires someone who at least understands accounts.”She said, “The bigger the company, the diverse its needs and hence people with various expertise in the world of finance are required. The traditional jobs like CA are also always in demand and you can start your own private practice.”“Every state or central government has a finance cell. Then we have auditors in almost every subset of the government. Hence, MPSC also prefers people with a finance background while recruiting people for jobs in the finance department,” Gargote said.G V Subba Rao who teaches in many institutions in the city said, “There are essentially four emerging fields in finance — financial engineering, behavioural finance, financial economics and financial risk management. These focus more on applied finance and problem-solving skills and make the students excel in one particular area which enhances their expertise, niche financial skills and magnifies their competitiveness in the job globally.”He added financial risk management has grown in a big way due to bad loans, non-performing assets, etc.An associate professor at Law school who wished to remain anonymous said that finance students can have a better understanding of certain areas in law which can taken up as a profession later on after completing their law degree. “Students who pass out of Class XII can do the five-year law programme or they can complete graduation and go for the three-year law programme. The upcoming fields related to finance in the law sector are corporate governance and finance, mergers and acquisitions, etc. ,” he said.
