Pune: For the family of 83-year-old Jagannath Bahirat, a retired India-Post employee from Mundhwa, a trip to Lonavla on Saturday was the part of an annual get-together of all family members, relatives and well-wishers.Tragedy, however, struck the family on Sunday when Jagannath, his son, Rajiv (52), daughter-in-law, Sonali (46), and granddaughter, Janhavi (20), were killed in a head-on collision between two cars at Karla Phata on old Pune-Mumbai highway when they were returning home from Lonavla.Rajiv, who was driving the red-coloured Santro car, was a deputy manager with engineering firm Thermax, while Sonali was a homemaker. Janhavi was to pursue her studies in business management after completing her graduation.A deep sense of grief and sorrow was palpable when TOI visited the Bahirat household in Kalashankarnagar on BT Kawade Road in Mundhwa. “Jagannath has two sons and a daughter. He immediately called for help, after which police and local residents rushed to the spot,” Salve added.Ajay said, “I was supposed to reach Pune from Pune-Mumbai expressway, but I changed my mind and joined old Pune-Mumbai highway and within few minutes, the accident occurred.”Two more succumb toinjuries, toll now 9The death toll in Sunday’s head-on collision between two cars at Karla Phata near Lonavla rose to nine with two victims, Pratik Balaji Sarode (18) and Rohit Kad (16), succumbing to their injuries while under treatment at a private hospital on Monday.Lonavla (rural) police told TOI that both did not respond to treatment and medical support.
