PUNE: Storage in the Khadakwasla dam reached its full capacity for the first time this monsoon on Monday morning, leading to discharge of water in to the Mutha river. The discharge started at the rate of 1,500 cusec in the morning and was increased up to 18,490 cusec till evening as heavy rain continued in the catchments throughout the day.The river flowing through the city swelled after the discharge rate was increased. Vehicles along the riverside roads and on the Baba Bhide bridge were stopped as a precautionary measure. The closure of the riverbed road triggered traffic snarls on several roads in the city’s central areas. The civic authorities have in the meantime told people living in the low-lying areas to be on alert with the water level of the river rising.Monday’s showers also increased the water stock in Varasgaon and Temghar over 50%, while the storage in Panshet rose to 77.40%. The collective water storage in the four dams increased up to 18.5 TMC (63.46%) till the evening.Among the four dams, Varasgaon recorded the highest rainfall of 95mm, followed by Panshet (76mm), Temghar (69mm) and Khadakwasla (33mm).Irrigation department officials said that they had no choice, but to increase the discharge of water from Khadakwasla up to 18,490 cusec because of heavy inflow of water in the dam.“The storage in Khadakwasla had reached up to 91% on Sunday. The catchments received continuous spells of rain from Sunday night. Rainfall activity increased on Monday. This prompted us to discharge water at the rate of over 18,000 cusec. Khadakwasla is a smaller dam with maximum storage capacity of 1.97 TMC, as against Varasgaon and Panshet’s individual capacity of over 8 TMC,” an official said. The irrigation department said it will take a call on release of water from Panshet dam in the next couple of days. “The storage in Panshet has already reached up to 78% of its total capacity. Water will be released after the stock touches the 90% mark,” the official said. The water stock in Pavana reached 69.38% on Monday evening with its catchment receiving 130mm of rain.
