PUNE: At least 441 Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited buses broke down across the city in the last three days, exposing the transport utility’s lack of monsoon-preparedness.Just before the monsoon could set in, PMPML authorities had claimed that all buses were being thoroughly checked and those having technical problems were being repaired.Around 150 buses broke down on Monday, 141 on Tuesday and another 150 on Wednesday, giving passengers a hard time and creating traffic jams at various places.“Of the 141 buses which broke down on Tuesday, 51 belonged to the PMPML, while 90 were being managed by contractors. On Monday, 60 PMPML buses and 90 contractor-run buses broke down. Similarly on Wednesday, 60 PMPML and 90 contractor-run buses broke down,” a PMPML official said trying to show the transport body in a better light.“We are just giving a break-up of the figures of the buses which belong to us and the contractors. This does not mean we are refusing to take responsibility,” another official told TOI, adding a report is expected soon after the teams complete inspecting the vehicles.Earlier on July 2, around 20 people had sustained injuries after a contractor-run bus fell into a nullah near the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass. This prompted the PMPML to form teams to inspect vehicles belonging to contractors.“I travelled in a bus from Hadapsar to MG Road on Tuesday. Many window panes on the bus were missing. As a result, water was entering the bus and passengers were getting wet,” Avineet Kulkarni, a resident of Hadapsar, said. Many passengers preferred to stand rather than sit near the window, he added.“For a passenger, it is a bus. What difference does it make if it is run by the transport body or a contractor?” Kulkarni asked.Sources from PMPML said things were getting problematic as “many buses are not in a good shape due to maintenance issues and the transport body is not doing much about it ”. In April and June, an average of 85 PMPML buses and 92 contractor-run buses had breakdowns daily.
