Monsoon set to weaken in state from July 27 to August 9

PUNE: The southwest monsoon is set to enter a weak phase in peninsular and central India between July 27 and August 9, putting on hold the wet-spell in the region for a couple of weeks.Weather officials said the rainfall during this period will be below normal in peninsular and central India, including Maharashtra and Konkan , which have been the “rainiest” regions in India in the past few weeks.“The monsoon has these intra-seasonal cycles — when it is active in one period and inactive the next. That is what will happen from July 27 onwards. Till now, the monsoon has been above normal in parts of central and peninsular India. However, now the monsoon trough is expected to move northwards and, therefore, the monsoon circulation will weaken over central India and the peninsular regions,” a source at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.Weather models have indicated below normal rainfall in central and south peninsular India between July 27 to August 2, and below normal rain in most of India between August 3 and August 9. However, the main deficient belt of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar may get slightly above normal rainfall during th e July 27-August 2 period because of the monsoon trough’s northward shift.Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, among others in northeast India are currently showing significant rainfall deficiency. Delhi has been deficient by 25% between June 1and July 21, UP by 45%, Bihar by 48% and Jharkhand by 42%.States in central and peninsular India have had normal to excess rains up till now, with Maharashtra, Telangana and Kerala reporting excess rainfall while Gujarat , Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha recording normal rains.Roxy Mathew Koll, a scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, said the monsoon trough is now a low-pressure belt from west Rajasthan to the Bay of Bengal, though its normal position is usually between central and north India. “If this belt shifts further northwards, the regions in the northern parts of the country will get good rains.
