Risky structures in merged villages pose challenge to PMC

A similar drive should be started in the newly merged areas. The area was recently merged in the PMC limits. Many structures, including old wadas, have been pulled down by the administration. The administration has not done enough even after six months of the merger,” Sasane added.The PMC’s area has increased by about 80sqkm with the addition of 11 villages.

PUNE: The collapse of a building in the Keshavnagar area on Saturday has brought into focus the need for structural audit of old properties and action against illegal constructions in the villages merged in the Pune Municipal Corporation limits.A source in PMC said the administration was yet to issue notices to old and dangerous structures in the 11 villages merged in the corporation limits in the beginning of 2018. Most of merged villages have large numbers of illegal constructions.A senior corporator said, “The administration has been serving notices to old structures in the city’s core areas. Many structures, including old wadas, have been pulled down by the administration. A similar drive should be started in the newly merged areas. It will be a vital task to ensure safety of properties,” he said.Officials in the building construction department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said the collapsed building at Keshavnagar was an RCC structure located near a nullah . The area was recently merged in the PMC limits. The officials claimed that they would chalk out a plan to prepare a list of old or dangerous structures in the merged villages.Yogesh Sasane, a corporator from the Hadapsar area, said the PMC’s plans to keep tabs on dangerous and illegal structures in the newly merged areas would not be effective unless the administration deployed additional manpower.“The elected representatives have been demanding for adequate manpower and funds for the merged villages because the existing manpower is not enough to deal with the new areas and the existing wards. The administration has not done enough even after six months of the merger,” Sasane added.The PMC’s area has increased by about 80sqkm with the addition of 11 villages. The new areas lack basic infrastructure , including roads, drainage lines and street lights.
