Matang’s march throw traffic out of gear on roads

The morcha started from Swargate at noon and culminated in front of the district collector’s office late in the afternoon.A circular issued by the traffic department, advising people not to use the roads located along the route of the morcha — Swargate to Camp and Camp to Collector’s Office, near Sassoon hospital — was largely ignored by motorists, compounding the ytraffic problem.This caused snarls at Dandekar Chowk, Satara Road, Maharshinagar, Shankarseth Road and Camp.

Pune: The accident involving a truck on old Sangam Bridge and the Matang community’s silent march on Saturday caused severe traffic jams in the old parts of the city, Swargate, Camp, Ganeshkhind Road, Shivajinagar and other areas.The police had closed many roads due to the morcha, while the old Sangam Bridge had to be shut after the truck punched through the railing, decimating a 50-metre section of the barricades.Vehicles going towards Pune railway station or Camp were diverted towards CoEP Chowk from Sancheti Hospital, causing congestion on Ganeshkhind Road, CoEP chowk, Sangamwadi Road, and RTO chowk.Meanwhile, members of the Matang community took out a morcha, pressing their demands of reservation, a stricter atrocities act, loan waiver and shutting of licensed liquor shops in and near slums.
