Pune techie feared drowned near Dudhsagar

"With heavy rainfall during the monsoon, the streams were flooded and the woman was washed away by the strong water currents. On witnessing the emergency situation, other trekking groups rushed to the spot and rescued the four trekkers, but efforts to trace Basu were futile. After a halt, the group commenced their trek on a route that was already quite crowded with trekking groups from out-of-state as well as Goan groups, forest department officials said. "The Pune-based group descended down into the woods, near a temple, and began to cross the stream. The area is also closed for tourists during the monsoon and the group had trespassed into the wildlife sanctuary," said Parab.

PONDA: A Pune-based woman was feared drowned after she was washed away in a gushing stream during a trek near the Dudhsagar waterfall on Sunday morning.Forest department officials said the trekking group had illegally entered the wildlife sanctuary.Colem police inspector Nilesh Dhaigodkar said that the woman, Suhagata Basu, 25, a native of West Bengal , was a member of a 13-member trekking group led by Vaibhav Pimpalkar from Pune, Maharashtra Basu was employed as a techie at an IT firm in Pune and she was accompanied by her colleague, Saurabb Dey, 25, also a native of West Bengal.The trekking group arrived by the Hazrat Nizamuddin-Vasco train and alighted at the Sonaulim railway station at 4.45am. After a halt, the group commenced their trek on a route that was already quite crowded with trekking groups from out-of-state as well as Goan groups, forest department officials said."The Pune-based group descended down into the woods, near a temple, and began to cross the stream. Basu missed her step and fell into the water," said Colem range forest officer, Paresh Parab.On seeing Basu in trouble, four others from her trekking group tried to rescue her and were also swept away by the gushing currents. On witnessing the emergency situation, other trekking groups rushed to the spot and rescued the four trekkers, but efforts to trace Basu were futile."With heavy rainfall during the monsoon, the streams were flooded and the woman was washed away by the strong water currents. We are trying to locate her with the help of Colem police and local residents," Parab said. The search operation was difficult as the waters were turbid. Authorities decided to call off the search operation late on Sunday evening and resume it on Monday."Only entry through the main gate into the wildlife sanctuary is legal. Entry through all other points is illegal. The area is also closed for tourists during the monsoon and the group had trespassed into the wildlife sanctuary," said Parab.
