PUNE: Former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Monday blamed the Union and the Maharashtra governments for the prevailing economic difficulties, including poor job creation.“Claims of large foreign investment and jobs creation have fallen flat. Poor agricultural and industrial growth is testimony to this. If the BJP government comes to power again in 2019, it will not only endanger the future development of the nation, but also the very existence of democracy in the country, the former CM said while speaking on ‘Economic Challenges before the nation’.The event was organized by the city unit of the Congress Party and Rajiv Gandhi Smarak Samiti.“If we study the statistics provided by the Centre as well as the state government in their different survey reports, we will realize that the nation as well as the state are facing severe economic problems,” he said, adding that the planning authorities at the Centre have been reduced to a formality.“Only two people are taking the decisions, which is causing more harm than good to the financial health of the country,” Chavan said.He said the Union government has made mistakes by taking decisions like demonetisation. “Even the way GST has been implemented has adversely affected the Indian economy. Wrong export policies are harming the interests of farmers as well as sugar mills in India. Despite having more than required production of sugar and Pigeon Pea (toor dal), government has allowed its imports. Resultantly, its prices have nosedived. People who are dependent on these commodities, are suffering due to the price fall,” Chavan added. He said development scene in Maharashtra is worrisome. “The industrial growth rate and the agriculture growth have gone down drastically. It is leading to more and more farmers’ suicides,” he said, adding that the government should focus on giving more power to the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices.
