PUNE: The presence of mind shown by the parents of a 30-day-old infant and swift intervention by doctors recently saved him from the clutches of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) — a condition that leads to crib deaths without any apparent cause.IT professional Snehshankar Jha had returned home in Wagholi from work on July 11 and was checking his emails before retiring for the night when a weird sound from his baby boy, Shivansh, sleeping next left him shuddered. His wife, Shivani. also woke up to the abnormal sound as the infant gasped for breath.“I vividly remember the night. It was around 12.30am and Shivansh was getting breathless every moment. I realized that it was an emergency,” Jha said. Without wasting any time, he started giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Shivansh.“That was the best thing we could do for Shivansh. We also kept on patting his back and tried to keep him on the sitting position and oriented,” he said. The parents’ race against time began the moment they put the baby in their car to take him to the nearest hospital. “I was driving and Shivani took turn to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Shivansh at quick intervals,” Jha said. The potholes along the entire stretch of Bakori road made the family’s journey all the more difficult. “We stay in Wagholi and have no option but to take Bakori road to reach the Ahmednagar road. Bakori road only connects Ahmednagar road. Its pathetic condition delayed the journey. We kept praying that the journey was smooth and ended fast,” he said. The Jhas first reached Lifeline hospital. However, the hospital didn’t have the facility needed to support their baby. They then reached Motherhood hospital in Khadari, around 3km from their Wagholi home.“It was around 1.30am by then. Though Shivansh was partially conscious, he had turned completely blue. Fortunately, the hospital had the doctors and the necessary medical infrastructure,” he said. The hospital’s consultant neonatologist, Mubashir Shah, said, “We noticed that the baby had turned blue. His heart rate was low and pulse was very weak. The baby was effectively resuscitated and was put on ventilator to support breathing. We administered drugs to support the cardiovascular system and improve his blood pressure.”Tushar Parikh, chief neonatologist in the hospital, said, “All credit goes to Snehshankar who took the right decision and administered cardio pulmonary resuscitation. Our medical team took over the case and we could save the infant. SIDS occurs in a child among a million across the world.”Shivansh was discharged from the hospital on July 22. “He is a brave child. This is the second time he has beaten the odds. The first time was at birth when he sailed through the period of a premature birth,” Snehshankar said.
