95 cloned debit cards used to withdraw cash in Kolhapur PUNE: The cyber crime cell of the Pune police on Thursday arrested two more men in the Rs 94.42 crore Cosmos Bank online heist, taking the total number of arrests in the case to six.The identities of the two men — Naresh Maharana (34) from Virar in Mumbai and Mohammad Saeed Iqbal Jaffri alias Ali (31) from Bhiwandi — were established from CCTV camera footage at ATMs in Kolhapur, where they had withdrawn huge sums of money between August 11 and 13. They have been remanded in police custody till September 24. Deputy commissioner of police (cyber) Jyoti Priya Singh said that during questioning, Maharana and Jaffri confessed that they had withdrawn lakhs of rupees from the ATMs at the behest of a ring leader, for which they were offered commissions of up to Rs 35,000.“Maharana and Jaffri are active members of a gang which used cloned cards at the ATMs in Kolhapur. They said they would withdraw the money while the ring leader waited nearby. The leader was working on behalf of cyber crooks operating from foreign countries,” she said.Singh said that while the duo knew they were using cloned cards, they did not know where the cards had been cloned. “They decided to target ATMs at a place like Kolhapur which is far away from their residences, thinking that the police would not be able to identify them,” she said.Maharana, who lives in Odisha, works as an auditor at a private firm in Vile Parle in Mumbai. “He and Jaffri knew each other but we are finding out how they came together for this job. Assistant public prosecutor Chaitrali Panshikar told the court that their custodial interrogation was necessary to recover the money and around 95 cloned cards used at ATMs in Kolhapur and also to establish the identity of absconding suspects. She pleaded for the duo’s police remand for 14 days, but the court granted 11days.Police have so far arrested six suspects in the online heist case. On September 11, the police had arrested Fahim Mehfooz Shaikh (27) of Nurani Complex in Bhiwandi and Fahim Azim Khan (30) of Azadnagar in Sillod, Aurangabad. A day after that Shaikh Mohammed Abdul Jabbar (28) of Sillod in Aurangabad and Mahesh Sahebrao Rathod (22) of Bhokar in Nanded district were arrested.The police are in receipt of voluminous data from NCPI on the CCTV footages of 21 banks whose ATMs were used by the suspects.
