Student of agriculture college in Konkan held for 45 vehicle thefts

Pune: Once he ran through the pocket money his father gave him, this 21-year-old student of an agriculture college in Konkan, took to stealing two-wheelers to fuel his merry-making.The crime branch of the Pune police arrested him and recovered 12 motorcycles worth Rs 5.5 lakh which he had stolen from different cities in the past one year.Their probe revealed that the student stole over 45 motorcycles and either sold it at throwaway prices or abandoned after emptying the fuel tank. “He used duplicate keys to steal the motorcycles. We have seized sets of eight duplicate keys from him,” inspector Ram Rajmane of the anti-organised crime cell (West) of the crime branch, said.Sub-inspector Sanjay Gaikwad said the student was taken into custody on September 10 on a tip-off received by police constable Santosh Kshirsgar.“During sustained questioning, the student admitted that he had stolen motorcycles from Pune,Mumbai, Thane, Panvel and Satara district,” Gaikwad said. He sold these motorcycles in Chiplun in Konkan and in Karad in Satara district, Gaikwad added.The student is from a well-to-do farmer’s family in Parbhani district. “He is good in studies. However, after finishing the pocket money sent by his father, he always needed more money for merry-making. They have contacted us for seeking the student’s custody for their probe,” Gaikwad said.
