Bapat withdraws defamation suit against Nawab Malik

He had named him only because he (Bapat) is heading the ministry.” Pune: State minister for food and civil supplies Girish Bapat moved a plea before a magisterial court here on Friday seeking withdrawal of a defamation suit he had initiated on December 1, 2015, against NCP spokesperson and former minister Nawab Malik.The suit was in relation to the allegations of graft made against him by Malik in the multi-crore rupees tur dal scam.Both, Bapat and Malik were present in person before JMFC S M A Sayyed when the minister's lawyers S K Jain and Amol Dange moved the withdrawal plea. Malik’s lawyer Zaheer Pathan confirmed the development and said, “The court has allowed the suit to be withdrawn”.Pathan pointed out that at the last hearing on July 22 this year, Malik had brought to the court’s notice that his statements were not meant to suggest that Bapat in his individual capacity had indulged in any corrupt practice but were only aimed at criticising the minister and the government’s policy.Malik had addressed a couple of press conferences in Mumbai on November 19 and 21, 2015, in relation to the tur dal scam and made certain remarks which Bapat claimed were defamatory.Bapat’s withdrawal plea on Friday referred to the July 22 hearing and read, “He (Malik) has specifically stated that he has absolutely no charges against Girish Bapat but he was criticising the policy of government and he has no intention to defame Bapat.
