PUNE: The Pune rural police carried out search operations in the Mula-Mutha river for the driver of a three-wheeler light commercial vehicle (LCV), which was found in the river early on Saturday morning.As the driver has mysteriously gone missing, the police are now exploring whether it was a case of vehicle theft , where the vehicle was dumped in the river by thieves.Uttam Saste, sub-inspector of the Lonikand police told TOI that locals alerted the police about a vehicle in the river. The callers also told the police that the vehicle had plunged into the river from the bridge connecting Manjri and Kolawadi. “When we reached the spot, we found that a three-wheeled tempo was under the bridge in the river,” Saste said.Saste said that with the help of the locals, the police team entered the water and searched the vehicle, which was badly damaged. “When we did not find anyone at the driver’s seat, we began searches in the water. The depth of the spot where the vehicle was lying was barely 4 feet. We did not find anyone in the water so our team went into deeper water and searched for the driver,” Saste said. He said that a crane was also summoned to the spot. “We lifted the vehicle out of the river in the afternoon,” Saste said.Saste said that he tried to trace the owner of the vehicle with the help of the registration number to learn the name of the driver. “I did not find the owner’s name at the regional transport office’s website,” Saste said.He said there is a possibility that the vehicle may have been stolen from somewhere and the suspects may have dumped it in the river to destroy it. “Prima facie probe revealed that the vehicle must have been used for construction work as we found some related equipment in it,” Saste said.“We will share the photographs of the vehicle in different groups on social media so that we get some information about the owner and the driver as well,” Saste added.
