Alert residents foil kidnapping bid in Chikhali

PUNE: The alert residents of Chikhali nabbed a 30-year-old man late on Saturday evening when he attempted to kidnap a two-year-old boy from an open plot here.The boy was playing with other children from the area when the incident took place. Khan placed a call to police control room, after which a police team arrived at the spot and took Gautam in their custody.Police said Khan runs a small shop in the area. “He went to the area in an inebriated state. However, a woman from the neighbourhood spotted him walking away with the child, prompting her to raise an alarm,” police said.Upon hearing the woman’s appeal for help, the local residents rushed to the spot and nabbed the suspect. “The shop and his house are located adjacent to each other,” they added.Gautam is a casual labourer and works with different shops and companies located in the Chikhali area but he had not reported to work on Saturday.

The boy’s father, Immanulhaq Sarajulhaq Khan (34), lodged a complaint with the Nigdi police, following which the suspect, identified as Dharmapal Gangaram Gautam (30) of MIDC Bhosari , was arrested.“Gautam reached the open plot around 7.30pm when four to five children between the age group of two to four years were playing there,” the first information report (FIR) stated,“Gautam picked up Khan’s son Abrarulhaq and started walking away from the spot around 7.45pm. However, a woman from the neighbourhood spotted him walking away with the child, prompting her to raise an alarm,” police said.Upon hearing the woman’s appeal for help, the local residents rushed to the spot and nabbed the suspect. We are questioning him as to why he wanted to kidnap the boy and where he was taking him,” police said.Gautam, who is not married, offered a biscuit to the boy and asked him to come with him, the FIR stated.
