PUNE: Three persons assaulted an elderly man to death and inflicted serious head injuries on his wife with sharp weapons before fleeing with gold ornaments worth Rs60,000 from their Dongargaon residence, off Pune-Ahmednagar highway, in the early hours of Tuesday.The Lonikand police identified the deceased as Kerba Diva Gadade (65). His injured wife, Mukta (61), has been admitted to the Sassoon General Hospital . The hospital authorities stated that her condition was critical.The robbers walked into Gadade’s small house at Gadade Vasti, a small hamlet of Dongargaon, about 35km from the city, through its main door with an axe. Police said the couple had left the doors open at night to let the fresh air in.The elderly couple’s daughter-in-law, Nirmala Ashok Gadade (30), a resident of an adjacent house, stated in her police complaint that the robbery occurred around 1.30am. The elderly couple was fast asleep then. The robbery and the assault came to light around 5.30am, when other residents of the vasti woke up and heard Mukta crying for help.The police said there were about eight to 10 houses in the vasti. But residents of none of them saw the robbers walking into the vasti and leaving the house after assaulting the couple. The police suspect that no other resident heard any noise during the attack because the robbers had gagged the couple before assaulting them on their head with the axe.The robbers snatched Mukta’s gold chain and other gold ornaments and walked away.The police have registered the crime under sections 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code
