2 fined Rs 3k each for driving against traffic flow

PUNE: Driving on the wrong side of the road will now come with repercussions __ a court appearance and a steep fine.Intensifying its drive against wrong side driving, the traffic police has started using smartphones for video recording the acts of traffic offenders in disputed cases. This has helped the police build a watertight case against offenders.A city court imposed a fine of Rs 3,000, under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicle Act, each on a motorcyclist and an autorickshaw driver for driving their vehicles on the wrong side of the road.A traffic police team, led by inspector Prabhakar Dhage, under deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Tejaswi Satpute, intercepted the autorickshaw driver for wrong side driving after he entered a one-way between Hirabaug and Puram Chowk on September 16. A motorcyclist was also intercepted for riding on the wrong side of Pune-Satara Road at Jedhe Chowk on September 17.Dhage told TOI, “Wrong side driving can cause fatal accidents. The problem is rampant during the early morning hours and late at night. To curb fatalities, we have launched a drive and taken action against nine traffic offenders since September 15. We have handed over the offenders to the Swargate police.”He said they had the powers to fine offenders up to Rs 1,200__ Rs 200 for wrong side driving and Rs 1,000 for rash driving under the Motor Vehicles Act.“The offenders pay fine but they don’t show signs of improvement and continue to commit similar offences. Our superiors have taken a call to prosecute the offenders under section 279 of the Indian Penal Code to deter them,” he added. The offenders were handed over to the concerned police station for action.Inspector (crime) Macchindra Pandit said, “We have registered four cases of wrong side driving and filed chargesheets in three cases. A magistrate presiding over the Motor Vehicles court has fined each of them Rs 3,000 after they pleaded guilty on September 16 and 17. One more offender pleaded guilty and paid a fine of Rs 3,000 on September 19. Another chargesheet will be filed at the earliest.”After the offender is handed over to the police, we register an FIR, we record the statement of witnesses and the investigating officer and complete other legal formalities and file chargesheet in the shortest possible time. The offender is produced before the court and a chargesheet is filed. If the offender pleads guilt, then the court can impose a fine on him. If he does not plead guilty, then the offender will have to seek bail, seek the services of a lawyer for a trial.The police have stepped up their drive to instil better traffic discipline.The convicted offenders may face problems in obtaining or renewing passports and driving licences, Pandit added.The traffic police, under the guidance of police commissioner K Venkatesham, have registered 100 cases against traffic offenders between September 15 and 19 at various police stations in the city.Video shooting of offenders is done in disputed cases.The Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate had taken the initiative to register FIRs against offenders for wrong side driving.
