Victims of crash in Kharadi say car sped on wrong side

All three then saw a Honda City and a high-end sports car racing down the slope towards Satav Vasti off Kharadi-Mundhwa Road. They all knew they would be hit next.“I shouted “run”, but before we could take a step, the white car ( Honda City) was on us. The driver got out of the car and jumped into the high-end sports car which was following him. I screamed but within seconds, the car was bearing down upon me,” he said.The police will verify if the cars were racing each other.

Pune: Mahendra Lokhande had just shut his fabrication shop and was standing on the road chatting with six-seater autorickshaw driver Ashok Adhav and Kalidas Puri who was in the passenger’s seat on Wednesday around 8.30pm.A screeching sound interrupted their conversation. All three then saw a Honda City and a high-end sports car racing down the slope towards Satav Vasti off Kharadi-Mundhwa Road. In a few seconds, the Honda City ran over Kantabai Sonune and her grandson Nayan Mokale, who were walking. They all knew they would be hit next.“I shouted “run”, but before we could take a step, the white car ( Honda City) was on us. It hit my vehicle and Lokhande. He fell on the bonnet and was thrown off a few metres away. My six-seater rose up on the back wheels for about three feet and then fell back. I was hurt in the leg and on my stomach and Puri also had some injuries,” Adhav told TOI.Lokhande said all that he remembers is seeing the cars racing and one bearing down upon him on the wrong side of the road and the terrible pain he felt when it hit him. He woke up in a private hospital in Kharadi with multiple fractures on both his legs.Bhausaheb Kadam, a local resident, who also saw the cars racing each other, said, “The white car hit the elderly woman first and then ran over the boy. He was flung a few metres away near the cement retaining wall. I screamed but within seconds, the car was bearing down upon me,” he said.The police will verify if the cars were racing each other. “We will access footage from the CCTV cameras of the shops and offices,” senior inspector Rajendra Mulik of Chandannagar police station said.“The witnesses told us that the Honda City after hitting the pedestrians, rammed a six-seater autorickshaw, a scooter and an SUV before it stopped. The driver got out of the car and jumped into the high-end sports car which was following him. The car then sped away,” Mulik added.The police arrested the Honda City’s driver Saurabh Shashikant Jasud, a student , of Chandannagar and invoked provisions of rash and negligent driving and of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against him. They will decide about the action against the driver of the other car.
