Pune police to use IVRS to reduce prank calls

Sometimes many people made misleading calls to the control room.The city police’s control room has seven dedicated lines for the emergency number of 100. PUNE: Officials at the city police control room, which used to receive as many as 30,000 calls per day, including several unwanted and prank calls, can now breathe easy.The police have managed to cut down unnecessary or prank calls, thanks to the installation of an Inter Active Voice Response System (IVRS). The number has now dropped down to about 1,500 calls per day from 30,000 per day, Suryavanshi said. Majority of the callers then just disconnect the phone.

Deputy commissioner of police (Headquarters) Sheshrao Suryavanshi, assistant commissioner of police (control room) Deepak Humbre and technical experts from Persistent Systems decided to work together to reduce the number of prank calls.Troubled with the prank calls, the city police even went a step ahead and lodged four complaints against the callers who misused the facility.Suryavanshi said that it is a facility for the people, especially who are in distress and need urgent help, but these prank calls used to kill the time of the policemen as well as used to increase the stress level.The new system asked details of the callers before diverting the calls to the policemen at the control room. Majority of the callers then just disconnect the phone. The number has now dropped down to about 1,500 calls per day from 30,000 per day, Suryavanshi said.
