PUNE: A 40-year-old woman came under the wheels of a speeding truck near Nyati Empire opposite Columbia Asia Hospital on Mundhwa-Kharadi bypass around 1.30pm on Friday, within two days after a car racing down the Kharadi road ran over two persons.Meena Sonkamble and her 21-year-old son, Suraj, from Raghoba Patil Nagar in Kharadi were crossing the bypass when she was hit by the truck. It dragged the woman along around 15ft and she died of multiple injuries.The truck driver, Pramod Wakade (29), from Dhanorie was arrested and the vehicle was seized.Assistant inspector Appasaheb More of the Chandannagar police said, “The empty truck was heading towards Kharadi Chowk after crossing the Mundhwa bridge when its driver lost control over the vehicle and hit Sonkamble, killing her on the spot at Baig Masjid Chowk. The accident threw vehicular traffic out of gear.”More said, “The driver told police that the victim tried to cross the bypass hurriedly and he suddenly applied brakes, but the vehicle hit her. The vehicle’s tyre marks could be seen up to 15ft, showing that the driver had tried to stop the vehicle.”He said, “We have arrested Wakade under sections 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of IPC among other charges of the Motor Vehicles Act.”A contractor had appointed Sonkamble and her son for housekeeping jobs at Ganga Arcadia housing society. Her husband is a labourer at a construction site.The victim’s son, Suraj, told TOI, “I escaped unhurt because I was walking behind my mother. The truck driver did not slow down on seeing the speed-breaker, instead he picked up speed and killed my mother. He did not apply the brakes instantly. I rushed my seriously injured mother to a hospital, but she was declared dead. Public intercepted the truck driver and handed him over to the Kharadi police chowkey.”The society chairman, Kiran Palase, said, “Sonkamble had gone home for lunch. She and her son were coming to the society when she was run over by the truck. Passers-by rushed her to a nearby private hospital, but she was refused admission. She was then taken to another hospital at Hadapsar, where she was declared ‘brought dead’.”Palase said, “We made several complaints to the Pune Municipal Corporation on its official portal and Tweeter handle to construct two speed-breakers on the either side of the bypass for restricting the speed of heavy vehicles to prevent accidents from June this year, but no action has been taken. PMC has given reasons like there is no budget, your complaint was attended and closed among other reasons whenever we took the issue up with its officials.”He said, “The PMC had later installed rumbler strips, but they got damaged within a fortnight because they could not sustain the weight of heavy vehicles. We want the authorities to take remedial measures to prevent accidents.”
