PIMPRI CHINCHWAD : The Leopard Rescue Centre (LRC) at Manikdoh in Junnar taluka has successfully reunited 51 leopard cubs with their mothers in the past 10 years.“The LRC conducts rescue and reunion of leopard cubs in Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik . Large-scale sugarcane cultivation and network of canals in the three talukas of Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed and Shirur provide an ideal place for leopards to live and rear the cubs,” Ajay Deshmukh, veterinary officer, LRC, said.“Leopard cubs till the age of 2 to 2.5 years remain with their mothers after which they start living on their own. Till the age of three months the cubs cannot walk briskly with their mothers, so they get separated and are often found by the villagers. Teams from the LRC and forest department officials travel to the villages to rescue the cubs,” said Deshmukh.Reduction in forest cover and grasslands lead to leopards straying into sugarcane fields and surrounding villages. Further, leopards are territorial animals and they are now moving into newer areas like Purandar taluka and as far as Bhor taluka. Forest officials feel it is important to create public awareness about the importance of reuniting cubs with their mothers.“Cubs are kept at the place where they have been found after the sunset in order to reunite them with their mother as leopards are nocturnal animals. In some instances, the mother has taken away her cubs as early as 7.15 pm and as late as midnight. Maximum reunions have occurred after 10 pm. Our team keeps a watch on the cubs from a distance of 200 to 1,000 meters, depending on the local terrain. We get to know about reunion through the cameras or through the pugmarks of cubs,” he said. The forest department had set up LRC in 2002 and managed it till 2007. It signed an MoU with Wildlife SOS in 2006 under which the department provides infrastructure while the latter looks after maintenance, medicine, food, treatment etc.
