PUNE: Offering a lift to an unknown woman on Wednesday night proved costly for a 53-year-old zilla parishad engineer. Inspector of the Bund Garden police station Sunil Zavare said the police have intensified patrolling, especially at night. “She pretended as if she was in a hurry and requested the complainant to drop her nearby,” he said.The engineer gave her a lift. The woman not only alleged that he had raped her but also demanded money from him by threatening to strip on the road.To get himself out of the bad situation, the terrified engineer gave the woman Rs 14,000 and went home. “After riding for some distance, the woman told the complainant to stop.

The woman not only alleged that he had raped her but also demanded money from him by threatening to strip on the road.To get himself out of the bad situation, the terrified engineer gave the woman Rs 14,000 and went home. After discussing the episode with his family, he lodged a complaint at the Bund Garden police station on Saturday.Samadhan Machale, sub-inspector of the Bund Garden police station, said, “We have registered an offence under section 384 (punishment for extortion) of the Indian Penal Code .”Machale told TOI the complainant, a resident of Narayan Peth, had worked till late on Wednesday. “He drove towards Alankar theatre as he wanted to buy fish on his way home,” Machale said.When the engineer was riding his two-wheeler towards Sadhu Vaswani Chowk, a woman, around 28 years of age, stopped him. “She pretended as if she was in a hurry and requested the complainant to drop her nearby,” he said.The engineer gave her a lift. “After riding for some distance, the woman told the complainant to stop. She got off and pulled out the key from the ignition,” Machale said. Before the complainant could react, she started alleging that he had taken her to a lodge and not paid the room’s rent.Shocked by her allegations, the engineer told her it was a case of mistaken identity. “The woman demanded money and threatened to strip on the road and tell people that he had raped her,” Machale said.Terrified, the engineer gave her the Rs14,000 he was carrying with him and left. “The complainant told us the woman was wearing blue jeans and a pink T-shirt,” the sub-inspector said.CCTV footage from the area did not show any results. Inspector of the Bund Garden police station Sunil Zavare said the police have intensified patrolling, especially at night. “Our probe is on,” he said.
