British nurse pays homage to fallen soldiers at Khadki

This is the centenary year of Armistice Day that marked the end of World War I The cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).Linda, a London-based children's’ nurse, has been visiting the KWC for the past 26 years.

She had first visited the cemetery as part of the scouts and guides team in 1992. “It’s been a very special place for me all these years. I feel heavenly to be here,” she shared.Linda’s grandfather Joseph Williams fought in WW I, her father Ernasn George served in the Ordnance Corps of the British Army and fought in WWII. “My uncle Joseph fought in Burma sector. Later, he was captured by the Japanese army and was a prisoner of war. He worked on the famous bridge on the river Kwai,” she recalled.Apart from Linda, at least five other foreign nationals were present at the KWC on Sunday.Retired British soldier Rob Hillard, who was part of operations in Afghanistan as Infantry Platoon Commander, said, “I have visited CWGC sites in the UK, France, Belgium, Turkey, Australia as well as New Guinea and Khadki maintains the same high standards.” Rob currently teaches history at Mahindra United World College at Paud.
