2 illegal sand miners flee from custody

PUNE: The owners and drivers of seven trucks — caught for illegally transporting sand at Manjari on the Pune-Solapur Highway on Monday at 6pm — fled from the custody of revenue officials along with their contraband-laden vehicles. We have supplied the vehicle registration numbers to the police and have requested them to trace the owners and drivers at the earliest. One of the teams, which was maintaining vigilance near a fuel station at Manjari, intercepted 19 trucks. After receiving the details, we will establish the identities of the owners and the drivers.

PUNE: The owners and drivers of seven trucks — caught for illegally transporting sand at Manjari on the Pune-Solapur Highway on Monday at 6pm — fled from the custody of revenue officials along with their contraband-laden vehicles. The Hadapsar police have now initiated an investigation into the case.Earlier, the revenue officials had launched a drive to check vehicles illegally ferrying sand in the Pune district . One of the teams, which was maintaining vigilance near a fuel station at Manjari, intercepted 19 trucks. Of them, 12 were impounded and sent to the pranth’s office on the Queen’s Garden Road in Pune cantonment.Seven of the remaining vehicles were parked along the road and their owners and drivers were rounded up. While the revenue officials were busy completing the formal paperwork for these trucks, the drivers and owners took advantage of the lax security arrangements and fled the scene.“We have registered an FIR for theft, obstructing officials from performing duties against the suspects and common intention under the Indian Penal Code . We have supplied the vehicle registration numbers to the police and have requested them to trace the owners and drivers at the earliest. Once the vehicles are impounded, we will impose heavy penalties on them for illegally transporting sand,” Chandrashekar Dagade, the circle officer of the revenue department, told TOI.Meanwhile, assistant inspector Mahesh Adling said, “We are in the process of obtaining the names and address of the vehicle owners from the regional transport office in Pune. After receiving the details, we will establish the identities of the owners and the drivers. We will then take a call to arrest them.”
