traffic breaking Mumbai Nagpur Maharashtra Aiming to bring down the number of accidents in the city and the Pune-Mumbai Expressway by at least 10 per cent in the coming year, police officials from Pune and the highway safety force are getting tough and cracking down onrule violators. Any motorist foundthe law will be booked, heavily fined and have their licence suspended for a minimum period of three months.Speaking to Mirror, Vijay Patil, superintendent of police, Highway Safety, said, “We have already begun enforcing the act, wherein city police from, Pune and the highway force will work in tandem to bring down the number of accidents on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. We will be carrying out the drive till the end of December. Along with imposing heavy fines, we will also be registering cases against motorists disobeying traffic rules. Several initiatives are being undertaken to bring down the number of accidents on the E-way — this is one of them.”This will be the first drive in which all law-enforcing agencies connected with the expressways and highways in and around Pune, Mumbai andwill be working together and booking violators for overspeeding, lane-cutting, drinking and driving, using a cellphone while driving, jumping traffic signals and travelling with passengers exceeding the car’s or a vehicle’s capacity.The decision was taken after a Supreme Court-appointed panel on road safety headed by retired SC judge KS Radhakrishnan expressed disappointment over the efforts made by thegovernment to reduce the number of road accidents.Elaborating further, Tejaswi Satpute, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), said, “We have received the notification from the government to start tightening and implementing norms against violators. We already are taking strict actions against such people and also counselling them about road safety.”Police present on the E-way will also soon be able to capture speeding and lane-cutting indiscretions on CCTV camera and crack down on careless commuters before they evade punishment. The highway police have already identified 105 spots on the route to install hi-tech CCTV cameras, covering stretches towards both Mumbai and Pune. These powerful speed-detection devices will be put in place under the integrated traffic management system (ITMS), and the project is slated to be completed six months from now.
