PUNE: The civic administration on Monday stood firm against the opposition to its decision to take action against illegal religious structures in the city.Over the weekend, the civic body’s anti-encroachment department had demolished 10 such structures on and around Satara Road Now, the Pune Municipal Corporation has set its sights on 542 such structures, which were built illegally by encroaching upon the roads.The civic administration revealed this at a general body meeting on Monday, after a group of corporators, cutting across party lines, raised questions about the drive by the anti-encroachment department on Friday and Saturday.The corporators alleged that the civic body was ignoring other types of illegal structures and focusing only unauthorized religious structures. “This will hurt the sentiments of the citizens. The civic administration should stop this action,” demanded a few corporators.However, municipal commissioner Saurabh Rao replied that the demolition drive cannot be stopped, as it was being organized as per the directives of the Supreme Court. “The demolition is taking place not just in Pune, but across the country. The state government has issued orders after getting directives from the Supreme Court. The action is being monitored by the court and will continue in the days to come,” Rao said.As per PMC data, the city currently has 738 illegally built religious structures. The civic body will have to demolish 542 structures, while 61 can be shifted and 135 regularised.After last week’s demolition drive, Madhav Jagtap, the head of the anti-encroachment department, said they were following the directives of state government, as per a Government Regulation issued in 2016. In fact, the civic body had initiated action against such structures in 2016. However, the drive had to be halted once the model code of conduct was enforced in the run-up to the 2017 municipal election.
