PUNE: The state-wide measles-rubella vaccination drive has hit some bumps to achieve the 100% target in the city.The drive started on November 27 as part of the nation-wide campaign to eliminate measles-rubella (MR) by 2020. Officials of some municipal corporations told him about the difficulties they were facing in carrying out the vaccination. Sayyed Wasim, assistant administration officer at PMC’s education department for Urdu-medium schools, said they held a meeting with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind , Pune branch. Misleading information shared on the social media have further added to the issues.”The chief secretary reviewed the drive in the state’s municipal corporations on January 10.

All students from anganwadis to Standard X between ages nine months and 15 years are being immunized as part of the drive.Civic officials here have so far immunized 70% of the children aged below five. Amit Shah , Pune Municipal Corporation’s immunization officer, said, “The first challenge to achieve the 100% target is MR vaccination is not compulsory. Some schools with a minority population have not supported the drive. Misleading information shared on the social media have further added to the issues.”The chief secretary reviewed the drive in the state’s municipal corporations on January 10. Officials of some municipal corporations told him about the difficulties they were facing in carrying out the vaccination. The chief secretary directed them to meet the target in 10 more days. “The drive maybe extended if we fail to achieve the target by then,” Shah added.Only 4,000 of the 15,000 students in the city’s 57 private and government Urdu-medium schools and 12 madrassas have been vaccinated so far. Sayyed Wasim, assistant administration officer at PMC’s education department for Urdu-medium schools, said they held a meeting with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind , Pune branch. “We plan to make a video, in which the head maulana will encourage parents to get their wards vaccinated,” he said.
