SC refuses to quash FIR against Elgar accused

The SC on Monday declined a plea to quash an FIR against Anand Teltumbde , one of the accused in the Elgar Parishad case. He is accused of having links with the CPI (M) and handling funds for the outfit with the other accused. The court, however, allowed him a four-week protection to enable him to seek pre-arrest bail from the competent authority.“We are not inclined to interfere at this stage,” the SC bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said in an order after hearing both sides. “Shri Kapil Sibal, learned senior counsel appearing for the petitioner, submits that interim protection against arrest granted by the (Bombay) high court on October 15, 2018, to the petitioner remained in force until Friday i.e January 18,” the order said.“We extend the said interim protection for a period of four weeks from today within which the petitioner may seek regular/pre-arrest bail from the competent authority if so advised,” the bench stated while disposing of the petition on these terms.Teltumbde, a senior academic at a management institute in Goa, had moved the SC after the HC, on December 21 dismissed his petition for quashing the FIR.
