Woman scooterist gets five stitches after nylon manja slashes her neck

PUNE: A 45-year-old woman, who was riding a scooter with her niece, suffered severe injuries after a kite string (nylon manja) entangled around her neck near Ashish Garden Society in Kothrud on Tuesday evening.The rider, Priya Shende of Right Bhusari Colony, received five stitches on her neck after the incident. “I also informed our family doctor while on the way to the hospital,” Sayli said.The niece said they would decide on lodging a police complaint after her aunt’s recovery. The police had seized manja worth Rs 300 from him.

PUNE: A 45-year-old woman, who was riding a scooter with her niece, suffered severe injuries after a kite string (nylon manja) entangled around her neck near Ashish Garden Society in Kothrud on Tuesday evening.The rider, Priya Shende of Right Bhusari Colony, received five stitches on her neck after the incident. “She is out of dangers and has been advised rest for the next eight days by the treating doctor,” Sayli Shende, niece of Priya Shende, told TOI.The incident occurred when Priya, along with Sayli, was riding towards Paranjape high school in Kothrud to meet a relative on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. “When we reached near Ashish Garden, my aunt felt a sharp stinging pain in her neck,” Sayli said, adding, “She immediately brought the scooter to an abrupt halt. Upon checking, she found a manja around her neck, which slashed her neck leading to the bleeding.”Seeing her aunt in immense pain and blood oozing out of her neck, Sayli took her aunt to a nearby hospital with the help of the local residents. “I also informed our family doctor while on the way to the hospital,” Sayli said.The niece said they would decide on lodging a police complaint after her aunt’s recovery. “As of now, we don’t know whether someone was flying a kite on the road or from the top of any building along the road,” Sayli said.When contacted, senior inspector Appasahebt Shewale of the Kothrud police said they had not received any complaint regarding the issue. “We recently took action against a trader for selling the banned manja in the areas,” the officer said.On January 11, the Kothrud police had booked a trader from Gujarat Colony for selling the banned kite string. The police had seized manja worth Rs 300 from him. Simultaneously, the Warje Malwadi police had seized manja worth over Rs 1,000 from a shop in Karvenagar.In February last year, Suvarna Mujumdar (42), who worked with the marketing department of a media house, was killed after her throat was slit by manja while she was on a scooter on the Shivaji bridge near Pune Municipal Corporation.
