Pune: The government railway police (GRP), Pune, arrested five men and detained two minor boys from Talegaon Dabhade railway station while they were preparing to rob Mumbai-Vijapur Express passengers of their valuables during the wee hours of Wednesday.The police identified the suspects as Shankar Bhimrao Jangale (20), Yashwant Balu Waghmare (20), Ashok Santosh Adwani (21) of Pimpri, Samadhan Kantaram Vanave (21) of Ahmednagar and Shrinivas Ashok Alkunte (36) of Pune. “The detained minors are 16 and 13 years of age,” an officer with the GRP Pune said.Senior inspector Suresh Goud of the GRP Pune said the suspects were planning to rob the valuables of women passengers inside the train. “The gang also included seven other members who managed to flee in the dark after we gave them a chase. We nabbed them after receiving a tip-off around 3am on Wednesday ,” he said.About the modus of the gang, Goud said the suspects would loiter on the platform where women’s compartments halt. “After the compartments come to a halt, they would then rob the women passengers of their valuables. They did not even hesitate to assault the passengers if they resisted,” the senior inspector said.The officer said the gang included seven other members who managed to flee in the dark after a chase. “A team headed by Suresh Goud of GRP Pune nabbed the suspects after receiving a tip-off around 3am on Wednesday. The police have recovered two knives, long blades and chilli powder from the suspects,” the officer added.Goud said the detained boys were homeless. “All the arrested suspects are unemployed and Jangale is the leader of the gang and has cases of robbery registered against him,” Goud said.The gang members met each other in jails where they were lodged previously. “They decided to work collectively after coming in contact with each other,” he added.
