PUNE: A 12-year-old boy fell to his death while flying from the unfinished terrace (14th floor) of a 13-floor apartment building in Gokulnagar at Katraj at 10.30am on Wednesday. The Bharati Vidyapeeth police have registered a case of accidental death. Sub-inspector Bholenath Ahiwale said they will take appropriate action against those responsible for being negligent, leading to the boy’s death..The boy was left unattended for 45 minutes after he fell. The family called his father, Dhananjay, who rushed home and took the boy to the hospital. By then, it was too late — the doctors pronounced him dead.Police said the boy, Om Dhananjay Aatkari, lived with his parents, elder brother and grandparents on the seventh floor of the building, which is still under construction. The bottom three floors have been set aside for parking, the Bharati Vidyapeeth police said. The family moved into the flat three months ago. They hail from Solapur, but had relocated to Pune several years ago.Om was a Standard VI student of an English medium school. “There was a function at his school in the afternoon, so he was home,” Dhananjay said. “He went up to the terrace to fly kites with his elder brother, Aditya, before even having breakfast or bathing,” he added.Dhananjay runs the canteen at a college in Bibvewadi. “There was some work pending in our flat. The workers had come to lay tiles and so, Aditya came back to the house to supervise them,” he said. After a while, Aditya went back to the terrace and couldn’t find Om. He rushed home, but Om wasn’t there either, his father said.“My wife and Aditya again went to the terrace again and saw the kite lying there. They searched everywhere, when Aditya looked down the staircase duct and spotted Om on the roof of the first-floor parking lot,” he said. The boy had fallen 33 metres. The frantic family called up Dhananjay, who rushed home and took him to the hospital. “Nobody took him to the hospital — he lay there for 45 minutes,” Dhanjanjay said.According to the boy’s family, a section of the building is unfinished. Only a few flat owners have moved in. Many of the flats were unoccupied. The terrace does not have doors and the duct through which Om had fallen was uncovered. “If something — a wall or a safety net — had been there, Om would have survived,” Dhananjay said.
