PUNE: Four people, including a boy, suffered burn injuries early on Monday morning following an LPG cylinder blast in a small room in Karvenagar, where they made snacks and sold them from a roadside stall. The condition of two persons injured in the blast, around 6am in the basement of Bhalekar Sadan, is serious. The fire brigade officials hinted at gas leakage triggering the cylinder blast.A source said none of residents of the society came forward to help the injured people because they went into a shock following the loud noise of the blast. The fire brigade personnel called ambulances after reaching the spot and sent them to a nearby hospital for treatment. They were later shifted to the Sassoon hospital. All the four injured persons are from Bihar . The Warje police and the fire brigade officials are yet to ascertain the names of the three injured persons. Only 13-year-old Ashok Chouhan has been identified so far.Mayur Deokar, a resident of the area, told TOI, “There was a loud noise at 6am and we rushed out of the house. I saw three men rushing out of the kitchen. We poured water on them and called the fire brigade,” he said.Fire brigade station duty officer Gajanan Pathrudkar, and firemen Yogesh Chavan and Ramchandra Adsul rushed to the spot after getting information about the blast. Pathrudkar said there were two gas stoves in the kitchen and the pipe of one of the stoves was not connected. “It is suspected that the gas came out through the loose pipe connected to the cylinder,” he said. The gas got stuck in the room because of the low night temperature, lingering around 5-7°C, despite the door ajar and windows open, Pathrudkar said. As soon as the gas came in contact with some spark, there was a blast.Chavan flung into the air and landed outside the room. Of the four injured people, only one had woken up when the blast occurred. The room owner had rented out the place to one of the injured persons about 15 days ago. They cooked samosa and vada pav in the kitchen and sold them on road near the campus of Karve Institute, Pathrudkar said.Cooking gas cylinder explosions are often reported early in the morning. In most cases, they are sparked by people, just out of bed, switching on the light or striking a match to light the burner. In several cases, the cylinder leak happens through the night. The reasons for the gas leakage could be many — from leaving the regulator valve of the LPG cylinder or the gas stove open or rodents aggravating the damage to the tube made from rubber.
